Have you heard about C.I.T.Y. of Support? It stands for "Children In Therapy and You," its mission is to create a dynamic online and in-person community that supports families navigating their child's needs in therapy, regardless of diagnosis. Until now, families with a child in treatment have struggled to find support groups if their child doesn't fit into a specific diagnosis category, like autism or Down syndrome. This has left many parents without access to crucial support and community resources, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation. But C.I.T.Y. of Support is changing that. This nonprofit, run entirely by volunteers for the past six years, welcomes everyone. Their website and social media forums are online, making them accessible at all times of the day and a safe place to ask questions, look for advice/recommendations, commiserate, and celebrate with other parents who understand. Their programs, events, and community initiatives are offered to families with children in therapy in Chicagoland at no cost, thanks to dedicated community partners. This online forum has over 5,500 members who come together to connect, collaborate, and celebrate, regardless of their child's diagnosis. In the N.W. suburbs of Chicago, C.I.T.Y. of Support has piloted in-person events like Developmental Playgroups, an annual Graduation Celebration, and a Parent Retreat. However, a consistent barrier for many families is the need for consistent, reliable, and appropriate childcare, limiting their ability to participate in these events.
C.I.T.Y. of Support's newest vision lies in the C.I.T.Y. Welcome Center. They are seeking funding for this project to create a physical location that would include engaging activities for children within a safe environment supervised by trained respite volunteers and a parent lounge for some well-deserved respite. This space could also support educational and social events, structured playdates, and mentoring possibilities. C.I.T.Y. of Support is open to various forms of support for this project, including financial contributions, in-kind donations, and volunteer assistance.
